It always amazes me how efficient the Germans are. Whilst settling down to watch Grand Designs the other day, I saw an entire house built in a Bavarian factory, shipped to England and built in three days, all without mistakes and of course - with a top quality finish. It's the same story with sport, I bet Michael Schumacher could waltz back into the Formula One paddock, shake Lewis Hamilton's hand before demolishing him on the track, without breaking a sweat.German cars are no different and a perfect microcosm of this can be found with one look at the Volkswagen Polo. Staggeringly this car has been with us for 33 years and is just as popular today as the first model was in 1975, which sold over 500,000 units worldwide in just six years. Originally a rebadged Audi 50, the Polo was sold alongside it's Audi counterpart but was cheaper to buy. Unsurprisingly, the Polo outsold it's identical twin and Audi stopped production of the 50.Buoyed by it's success a face lifted Polo appeared in 1979, with subtle styling changes to bring the baby Polo into line with the design of the existing Jetta Saloon (this included square headlights on the top-of-the-range 'Derby' derivative). It was VW's intention for this to act as a stop-gap until the Mk II Polo arrived in 1981.It's fair to say that Porsche are often criticised for having a lazy design studio, after all the 911 has looked almost identical for 40 years, but Volkswagen made a fair fist of clinching the title in 1981. The Mk II Polo was essentially identical to it's predecessor, although crucially what it lacked in originality of styling, it more than compensated for with build quality and reliability. Whilst it's main rivals the Renault 5, Fiat Uno and Austin Metro have long since gone to the great scrap yard in the sky, the Mk II Polo is still in plentiful supply on Britain's roads.Built until 1994, the Mk II also allowed Volkswagen to pioneer new technology - most notably a G-supercharged engine that would later be the basis for the one found in the Corrado and Golf. As with the Mk I, the second generation Polo received a subtle facelift in 1990 for the final four years of production. Despite new headlights and bumpers it still bore a near identical resemblance to the original 1975 model. One notable feature however was the introduction of a removable stereo/cassette unit, allowing for increased security and was a hit with buyers and is now de-rigueur with all in-car audio units.1994 finally saw a significant update of the Polo. Available in 3 and 5 door hatchback versions, the car sat on a new chassis shared in part with the SEAT Ibiza (VW also owning SEAT) and the Polo's big brother the Golf. Eight different engines were available, the largest choice yet in the Polo range and more contemporary styling was also on offer. The turn of the millennium saw the obligatory facelift with 70% of the components being changed, although this wasn't outwardly visible. The car certainly continued the tradition of being better made and having a more upmarket feel than its rivals and sold well. It also won a number of awards including best 'Supermini' from Top Gear, Auto Express, and Which? in the late nineties.The Mk IV Polo was launched in 2002 and further built upon the heritage of it's predecessors. Again sharing a platform with the SEAT Ibiza and additionally the Skoda Fabia, the Polo's appearance was dramatically changed, with quad headlights similar to the smaller Lupo featured in the new design. No fewer than 11 different engine options were available, each with different levels of trim to complement. Despite early promise, the Mk IV didn't sell as well as previous Polos and faired poorly in many customer satisfaction surveys, including high profile ones such those conducted by Top Gear.With this in mind, the Mk IV, was redesigned in 2005 and is the model found on the roads today. Subtle exterior changes were made for the car to again share the design style of others in the Volkswagen range, particularly the Passat and interior components were redesigned in the light of previous criticism. Apart from the increasing threat of global warming, the increasing price of petroleum fuel in the world market is also a reason for this demand. This is just another instance that demonstrates why truth is not something that depends on majority opinion. Truth is not about what the majority of people think something is. Truth is what IS. If most people thought baseball was invented in Japan it would still be true that it was invented in upstate New York So Wikipedia launches with an unsound initial premise and frequently veers to the South (as regards logic) from there as happens in their discussion of Hydrogen gas for automobile engine fuel. There is a great comedy bit on this irrationality of the Wikipedia approach to truth which you can view HERE So, what is wrong with what Wikipedia says? Because there are thousands of vehicles on the road right now that are using Hydrogen as fossil fuel substitute or using it in combination with gasoline to maximize their fuel economy by as much as 25-50% or more! An obvious solution that would help considerably towards solving any oil shortage would be for the vehicle manufacturers and oil companies to cease and desist their illegal hacking of computers in automobiles made since 1995 so as to allow them to perform at the MPG they are otherwise capable of performing at! Vehicles are manufactured since the mid 1990s with a built in computer system. These computers are factually pre-hacked against getting the gas mileage that they would otherwise be able to attain! If the automotive and oil companies wanted people to get a bigger bang for their buck at the service station they would reset their computers!! This is a highly criminal action which violates contracts that these industries have with the EPA and other government agencies with regards to fair business practices.And this is one that Big Oil REALLY doesn't want you to know about. The know how to run vehicless with water-based engines has existed for over ninety years! In the last couple of years it has been made available to the average citizen via Water4Gas and their open source developments in the area which has enabled many others to contribute to advancements. So Chevron is raking in billions every year in profit, they let go of a few hundred million to "research" alternative energy sources, meanwhile, they persist in collusion with vehicle manufacturers to install artificial limits on MPG and they ignore the fact that Brown's Gas, Hydrogen from Water, Hydrogen On Demand and so forth are being used in the car engines of thousands of drivers today AND they foster the image that they are attempting to find alternative technologies as a method in which to obfuscate and a diversion so that folks don't find out that the technology already exists!!! If you are unindoctrinated, WATER4GAS is providing information for a fee which individuals can use at home to build a small device which infuses hydrogen into the gas/air mixture that their car runs on. What this does is make smaller particles out of the particles that the system burns as fuel. Therefore the engine is able to use considerably more of it. By doing this you can reasonably expect to improve your fuel economy by 12%. In reality though many are getting 30-50% improvement or even more. Most Subaru owners love their vehicles. And while we are very satisfied with them in stock form, there's something in the Subaru owner's brain that makes them want to modify their vehicle. What would make a person take a perfectly running vehicle and mess with is a topic for another discussion though.
While each of us in our mind's eye have a vision for our vehicles within our perspective budgets, this narrative is catered towards probably the highest percentage of Subaru owners, including myself. Power is nothing without power is the phrase I am fond of saying. While some people's hearts flutter when considering brake upgrades, suspension components, driving schools, and the like, give me something that adds horsepower any day. With this in mind, I'd like to review what most consider being the very first power mods to their Subaru.
Step 1. Research. Before you perform ANY modification to your car, you must weigh the pros and cons of the potential modification. This is because there are very few "no downside mods" with our vehicles. When you think you've researched the mod to the ends of the earth, wait a few days and start over. The general rule of modification is 90% research and 10% purchase.
Another good tip is to ask yourself the following questions. These are only examples and should be tempered towards your specific mod(s):
a. Will this affect my neighbors? The really awesome exhaust your buddy has may be the genesis of sour neighborhood relations. b. How will the law look at it? Realize that many states and localities frown on exhaust modifications with regard to noise and tampering with catalytic converters. c. Will this affect other people who drive my car? Step 2. Installation planning. Right after you've made your decision, find out what is involved with the install. This rule applies even if someone else or a professional will be doing the install. What gaskets do you need? What are the torque specs? What parts should you buy just in case? The list goes on and on, but more than one install has been put off for a third hour run to the parts store. Remember, there's nothing worse than to have performance parts sitting in your living room; prepare before you buy.
Now that you know the most important aspects, let's cover the basic power mods.
Exhaust. This is one of the more expensive first mods. A typical full exhaust system can run around $1000 and add around 25HP. This is also one of the trickiest mods in terms of personal satisfaction. The reason for this is that most users select an exhaust that is simply too loud. You've read the online reviews that praise the quality, fit, finish, and cost effectiveness of say a Helix exhaust. You decide to pull the trigger. You spend the better part of 2 hours doing a textbook install and go for a spin, loving every minute of it. Then reality sets in. It drones at highway speeds, your wife hates it, your neighbors hate it, and you just got your second exhaust ticket....
When it comes to exhaust volume, you are limited as online audio clips that just don't provide a physical realization of how loud it is. In order to do so, you need to find a local with this exhaust or rely on a trusted Vendor who will tell you a good comparison.
Also, don't forget to search online forums for used exhaust systems. Used exhausts are a real bargain. Sure, it may have a ding or some scratches, but how long will your showroom exhaust stay looking that way anyway?
Intercooler hoses (for turbo Subarus except the STi). Real great bang for the buck mod with zero drawbacks. For around $150, you get a quicker spooling turbo and somewhere in the neighborhood of 8HP. This will replace the stock plastic accordion piece with a freer flowing unit. The other hoses are mainly for looks and do nothing; so many users give these away or don't install them. Once again, used is perfectly fine.
Uppipe (for turbo Subarus except 2006+ turbo models and the STi). This is arguably the best first mod. Considering you will gain 10HP for around $200, it's another great bargain mod. The big downside, other than possible legal issues with removing a cat from your system, is the installation. This install requires a lot of planning and a lot of time.
Much has been written about the horrors of this install, but as long as you have the correct tools, utilize the correct techniques, and allot yourself a full eight hour workday in case of problems, it can be done alone. The best way to perform this is to have a friend assist, preferably one with previous uppipe experience. It is within the realm of a shade tree mechanic though as most of the install consists of moving easy parts out of the way to access the uppipe. Used uppipes are perfectly acceptable though most owners generally do not swap this part back out once installed.
Intake. For naturally aspired Subarus, they are 100% fine as they are MAP based systems. For turbo Subarus, which are MAF based, this mod requires some knowledge. We all know that intakes are the first mod on most cars. Do not fall into this logic with a Subaru as it isn't like other cars in this regard.
If you want an intake for your STi, there are several choices that require careful research on your part and are 100% fine. An example of a good intake is the K&N Typhoon intake which has been independently tested as providing good air/fuel ratios. Just because your buddy has an Apexi intake on his STi and it runs great does not mean it is doing unseen/unheard harm. Most aftermarket intakes, without tuning, will make your car run lean, which can be a dangerous condition or one that will decrease the reliability of your car.
If you want an intake for any other model turbo Subaru, there are a few good choices that require research as well.
Recently, SPT announced a new intake designed for the STi, but not other models. This is good news, but also begs the question: Data seems to point to fewer problems with intakes on the STi than other turbo Subaru models, so maybe other turbo Subaru models just do not work as well with intakes as the STi?
If you plan on tuning, any intake for any Subaru model will work. Some intakes are easier to tune than others though, so talk this point over with your tuner prior to purchasing. This can save you an extra hour on the dyno and at up to $200/hour + dyno time, it's a 5 minute phone call work making. But, your tuner just might talk you out of an intake though. For that reason and many others, used Subaru intakes are plentiful.
Engine Management. For the 2002-2003 WRX owner this is not as big of a concern as it is for 2004+ turbo Subaru owners (minus STi). The reason for this is the EPA mandated engine tuning requirements in 2004 for manufacturers changing the transition for open/closed loop periods due to emissions & fuel economy reasons. Manufacturers are allowed to exclude one model and Subaru chose the STi. What this means is that 02/03 WRX and STi owners, with sufficient knowledge, can safely use manual boost controllers, air fuel controllers, and the like. For 2004+ turbo Subaru owners, your best bet is to discover the world of engine management. As well, for all Subaru owners, you are best served by engine management as there are hundreds of power variables that can be changed aside from say boost or A/F ratio.
Choosing an engine management system is a very hard process and probably the one that requires the greatest amount of thought for ALL mods. You want to ensure that the system you choose will accommodate your present and future desires. In the case of a local tuner, in might just be in your best interest to use their recommended system. This is because if you have problems or need a retune, they are better able to handle your system than say the "better" system you have your eyes on.
Used components are an outstanding way to go. Many users sell their system due to poor planning as they quickly outgrow their system, so you can find great deals on lightly used equipment. Ensure that the system will work with your vehicle though as many systems are year and/or transmission type specific.
Now that you have an uppipe, intercooler hoses, a full exhaust, and some engine management, you are at the "Stage 2" level of power. Stages are just a marketing tool, but to give you a better realization, it should mean you are putting around 50 more HP to the wheels than a stock car in a turbocharged Subaru; numbers will be slightly less with N/A models.
This is an amount of power that you can feel. Your car should be much more drivable and should reduce most of your low end/off the line sluggishness that you previously may have experienced. With this power though, you will also maintain a high degree of reliability and there shouldn't be much of a change in your day to day mileage either. Subaru Canada, Inc. earlier announced the addition of 2009 Legacy and Outback models to its PZEV lineup this spring. The vehicles were introduced by the automaker at Le Salon International de l'auto de Montréal.
"We are delighted to offer Canadians the opportunity to purchase a vehicle that reduces their impact on the earth while retaining the fun, freedom, confidence and control that Legacy and Outback deliver," said Katsuhiro Yokoyama, the president and chief executive officer of SCI. "The Legacy and Outback PZEV have also received SmartWay certification from the United States Environmental Protection Agency, and are listed in its Green Vehicle Guide that recommends the cleanest and most fuel-efficient vehicle choices."
The 2009 Legacy and Outback PZEVs are equipped with an upgraded version of Subaru's 2.5-litre 4-cylinder SOHC 16-valve horizontally opposed Subaru boxer that is capable of generating 170 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 170 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,400 rpm. Also, it utilizes the conventional unleaded fuel. All 2.5-litre engines are mated to the automaker's AVCS variable valve timing technology that ensures optimization of the volumetric efficiency. The engines will be backed by a 4-speed electronically controlled Sportshift automatic transmission.
The PZEV lineup for 2009 will be made more captivating by featuring a power driver's seat, heated front seats, as well as heated exterior mirrors with LED turn signals. The wagon versions will be given a retractable cargo cover. Additionally, the Outback PZEV will be featuring standard fog lights and a power tilt-and-slide twin-panel glass moonroof, reported the NewsWire.

Aston Martin is a British vehicle manufacturer that is cantered in Gaydon, Warwickshire, England. It was started by Robert Bamford and Lionel Martin in 1913. The two men had partnered to sell cars made by Singer in 1912. The two men decided to make their own cars and named their model the Aston Martin after Martin's love of the hill climb races at Aston Hill (which is near Aston Clinton). The first Aston Martin ever produced was a four cylinder Coventry-simplex engine that was on the chassis of an Isotta Fraschini from 1908. The car was made before they managed to acquire manufacturing premises in Kensington at Henniker Place (this happened in 1915). Unfortunately mass production of their cars could not start as soon as the partner's had hoped because of the outbreak of the first World War, which is when Martin joined the Royal Army Service Corps and they sold all of their machinery to the Sopwith Aviation Company.
The company was re-founded and revitalized after the war ended when the company received financing from Count Louis Zborowski. Bramford left the company in 1920 but not until they had designed a new car.
Over the course of the car's history, Aston Martins have been made to compete in the French Grand Prix (1922); they have set world endurance and speed records at Brooklands. The company has failed two times, once in 1924 and in 1925 with a factory closing taking place in 1926. The company was finally bought by some very rich investors, Lady Charnwood among them, and it was renamed Aston Martin Motors. The company headquarters were moved to Feltham and in 1929 the Aston Martin International racer car was a huge success.
In 2007, the company was purchased by David Richards, who is the Prodrive chairman. It is still co-owned by Ford (a development that happened in 1994). The company has also recently opened dealers in Europe and China. Now the company has dealers in 28 countries.

The comparison test was done between the Toyota Camry Hybrid, the Nissan Altima Hybrid, and the Saturn Aura Green Line, the latter being the hybrid version of the reigning North American Car of the Year.Each of the three hybrid sedans has each own positive and negative feedbacks but in the end, Edmunds judged the Camry Hybrid as the best of the lot. Normally, the test would have included the Accord Hybrid, but earlier this year, Honda announced that they will no longer produce Accord Hybrids. Second to the Camry Hybrid is the Altima Hybrid and number three on the ranking is the Saturn Aura Green Line.According to Edmunds, the criteria they have used to determine the winner of the comparison tests is based on the concerns of hybrid auto buyers. Fuel efficiency is the foremost concern. After all, hybrids are becoming more and more popular due to the increasing price of gasoline. Performance is also considered but only to a minor degree. The prices of the vehicles are also considered.The Camry, according to Edmunds, topped the list in terms of fuel efficiency. In a road test conducted by Edmunds, the Camry posted a combined highway and city gas mileage of 43.2 mpg. On city driving though, the Altima Hybrid is the leader. While the Camry returned 44.5 mpg on city driving, the Altima posted a 47.3 mpg. The Saturn Aura Green Line cannot come up with gas mileage rating even close to that of the Altima and Camry Hybrids.The reason for this is that Saturn's hybrid powertrain is a 'mild' hybrid. This means that while it has an electric motor which provides additional power to its internal combustion engine, it cannot power the car alone. In contrast, the Camry Hybrid's powertrain allows its electric motor and battery pack to power the sedan on low power operations like deceleration.Edmunds' Inside Line Senior Road Test Editor, Josh Jacquot, has this to say about the Camry: "It's the Camry's abundant features, comfortable ride and fuel-sipping efficiency that takes it to the top of the podium in this test. The simple fact about the Camry Hybrid is that, like the standard Camry, you get a lot of car for your money."Meanwhile, the Nissan Altima hybrid also pleased Edmunds with its roomy interior and power output. The Altima Hybrid is the first hybrid vehicle marketed by Nissan. Its powertrain technology is the same as that used in the Camry Hybrid and the popular Prius. Edmunds' consumer advice editor Philip Reed has this to say about the Altima Hybrid: "The Nissan Altima Hybrid has basically flown below the radar. If you drive it right the Altima can get 37 miles per gallon in urban driving. To achieve that in a car that is roomy and has a pleasing amount of power is amazing...the Altima was my top pick of the three hybrids."The Saturn Aura Green Line also impressed Edmunds with its redesigned interior. This is the product of the automaker's partnership with German automaker Opel. With its wide array of standard features and other Saturn accessories, the Aura Green Line is still the lowest priced of the three. The interface between the driver and the vehicle is a driving suit made of millions of microscopic actuators, which enables the driver to experience the road psycho-somatically while making the driver and vehicle indistinguishable from each other. In the world of fast and mean machines we often find a few brand names which catch our attention due to their reputation, style and price tags. European cars are most of the time the ones who take the all the glory due to their extreme attention to detail, speed and power; some have even said that the only thing some of the fastest cars are lacking, are wings. With so much horse power it wouldn't be surprising to hear one of those cars went airborne.

While some of the most powerful and fastest cars are fairly new, some movies such as the fast and the furious have brought sexy back through some old and powerful models, that is the case of the fully tweaked 1970 Dodge Charger, the 1965 Ford Mustang, 1965 Shelby Cobra Daytona, the 1971 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, 1970 Plymouth Roadrunner GTX, etc. These classic cars are surely attention grabbers since their original design is really unique compared to most modern cars.

Baseball, apple pie, and pickup trucks - three symbols of the down-home American heartland. Americans tend to love all things American and the pickup truck is no exception. The very first pickup truck debuted, thanks to Henry Ford, in 1925. Although a bit lengthy for today's marketing standards, Ford described it as a "Ford Model T Runabout with Pickup Body." It was surprisingly similar to current pickups with an adjustable tailgate, a large cargo box, and heavy-duty springs in the rear.

Throughout the United States' short history, the pickup truck gained popularity and continued to evolve. Three years later, Ford replaced the Model T with the Model A - which was the first closed-cab pickup and included new features like roll-up side windows and a safety glass windshield. Capable of a whopping 40 horsepower (impressive at the time), the Model A sported a four-cylinder engine and three-speed transmission.

By 1931, Chevrolet stepped up and offered its first pickup model in an effort to compete with Ford. But Ford wasn't going anywhere. They countered the following year by releasing an even more powerful pickup with 65-horsepower and the Ford flathead V8 engine, a strategy that proved profitable to say the least. By 1936, there were three million Ford trucks on the road and the pickup led the industry in sales.

When the Great Depression hit, farmers needed to scale back and could no longer afford a truck for their farms and a car for their families. Thus, the need for a passenger-ready pickup was born and an Australian Body designer at Ford Australia designed the "coupe utility" -- the precursor to today's full cab pickups by marrying the front of a car body to the rear of a pickup body. The result was successful worldwide and because they were designed for work, American banks didn't hesitate to loan farmers money to buy them. Sales skyrocketed and the modern pickup became a staple of growing America.

While pickups were prevalent all over the country, Texans became particularly fond of them. Calling them "rancheros" because of their importance to Texas horse ranches, the state is sometimes referred to as "the land of pickup trucks." And rightfully so. The state of Texas actually offers a lower tax on pickup registration than it does on any other vehicle.

Portrayed as a rough and rugged symbol of the ultra-masculine American man, pickups began to make appearances in Hollywood movies from neo-Westerns to the preferred vehicle of tough guys like Clint Eastwood in "Every Which Way But Loose," and John Travolta in "Urban Cowboy." And when a symbol of America emerges, politics are right behind, ready to exploit it. In a campaign speech, presidential nominee hopeful Fred Thompson even described his opponent's faults by saying, "He hasn't spent enough time in a pickup truck," suggesting his opponent had trouble connecting with the "real" America. Even President George W. Bush - a proud Texan - has been observed driving around his ranch in a pickup.

Pickup trucks are no less popular today. Car companies find that while car sales in the U.S. are less stable, the pickup truck holds its own. Even companies like Isuzu now offer only high-performance pickup trucks (two models - the i-290 and i-370) and a single SUV model. Although people tend to love their SUVs and their flashy sports cars, pickup trucks continue to hold on as one of the best selling American vehicles. And from what we surmise, apple pie isn't going anywhere either.
